丸暗記しようと意気込んで英語の辞書を広げた学習者が、ごく初期に突き当たる難関が“aardvark”である。
「ツチブタ」を意味するこの単語は、学習者の脳裏にさまざまな疑問を巻き起こす。
『こんな単語を憶えて、いったい今後の人生で役に立つことがあるのだろうか？』
『このレベルの憶え甲斐のない単語が、このさき山ほど待ち構えているのではないだろうか？』
『そもそも「ツチブタ」って何!?』
渦巻く疑問に苛まれた学習者は、遅かれ早かれ辞書暗記を放棄してしまうのである。
これが英語学習界に伝えられる「ツチブタの呪い」である。
